Citrine is the transparent yellow to orange or brownish-orange variety of crystalline quartz. Its chemical composition is silicon dioxide, and it has a Mohs hardness of about 7. The name describes a color variety, not a single mine, cut, or quality grade.

Natural-color citrine is relatively uncommon. Much of the citrine sold today began as amethyst and acquired a yellow, orange, or brownish-orange color through heating. Natural origin and heat history cannot be judged reliably from one visual clue.

Heated amethyst is commonly sold in the gem trade as citrine because the resulting material is still quartz with a citrine-like color. It is not the same purchasing category as natural-color citrine, however, so a seller should state the treatment clearly.
