Chalcedony vs Agate: Related, but Not Interchangeable

Agate is generally defined by banded chalcedony structure. Its bands can differ in color, translucency, crystallite orientation, porosity, and microscopic inclusions. This makes agate part of the broader chalcedony world in common mineralogical usage, but it does not make every chalcedony an agate.

The retail shortcut “agate has patterns; chalcedony has none” is too crude.
