Question 1

Is Liuli glass or natural crystal?

Accepted Answer

Modern Liuli art is made from glass. Some studios use crystal glass, which is also manufactured glass. Natural quartz is a different, crystalline material. Liuli’s composition, color, density, and transparency depend on the glass chosen by the maker.

Question 2

What is lost in lost-wax Liuli casting?

Accepted Answer

The wax positive is removed after a refractory mold captures its shape. Glass fills the resulting cavity. The refractory mold is normally sacrificed when the cooled casting is released; the original design or reusable model-making mold may remain.

Question 3

Can a lost-wax Liuli design be reproduced?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A preserved original or flexible mold can produce new wax positives for new investments. An edition can share a design while individual castings vary in color movement, small bubbles, and hand finishing.

Question 4

How long does lost-wax Liuli casting take?

Accepted Answer

The time depends on design development, mold preparation, the glass, thickness, kiln cycle, and finishing. The firing is only one part of the work. Ask the studio about the particular piece rather than applying one schedule to all Liuli.

Question 5

Are bubbles in Liuli always defects?

Accepted Answer

No. Small enclosed bubbles can be part of the intended appearance. Their size, location, and relationship to the design matter. Open cavities, sharp chips, and cracks need separate attention, and bubbles alone do not establish a casting method.

Question 6

Is lost-wax Liuli made the same way as bronze?

Accepted Answer

Both use an expendable pattern to create a cavity. In the kilncasting process, glass softens and flows within a heated mold setup; bronze casting commonly pours molten metal into a prepared mold. Their materials and temperature schedules differ.

Question 7

Is lost-wax casting the same as pâte de verre?

Accepted Answer

Lost wax names a method of creating the mold cavity. Pâte de verre involves arranging and fusing glass particles in a mold. The two can be combined, but a lost-wax casting can also use larger pieces of glass.

Question 8

Can a Liuli ornament be used as a tea vessel?

Accepted Answer

Use it for tea or food only when the maker identifies that particular object as suitable for the intended contact and temperature. A decorative sculpture’s glass, finish, and construction may be designed for display.
