Question 1

What does the Sanxingdui sacred tree mean?

Accepted Answer

It is commonly interpreted as an ancient Shu ritual image linking heaven and earth, with birds suggesting solar and spiritual connections. Today, its rising branches also inspire personal wishes for growth, renewal, and connection.

Question 2

How tall is the Sanxingdui bronze tree?

Accepted Answer

Bronze Sacred Tree No. 1 has a reconstructed overall height of 3.96 meters. Its surviving trunk height is 3.59 meters, and its uppermost section remains incomplete.

Question 3

Why are there nine birds on the tree?

Accepted Answer

The three tiers have three main branches each, with nine perched birds altogether. They invite comparison with the ten-sun story of Fusang. A tenth bird at the missing top is one interpretation of the unfinished composition.

Question 4

Is the bronze tree Fusang or Jianmu?

Accepted Answer

Fusang provides a solar-tree comparison, while Jianmu offers the image of a route between heaven and earth. Ruomu is also used in comparisons with the wider group of bronze trees. These stories illuminate the imagery; the object’s ancient Shu name remains unknown.

Question 5

Which way does the dragon face?

Accepted Answer

The dragon’s head points downward beside the trunk and its tail rises above it. Its descending posture helps convey the tree’s interpretation as a connection between the upper world and the earth.

Question 6

Who restored the sacred tree?

Accepted Answer

Yang Xiaowu and Guo Hanzhong played central roles in restoring No. 1. The formal restoration plan was reviewed in March 1990, and the work involved matching fragments, trial assembly, and carefully supporting the damaged bronze.

Question 7

Are there other sacred trees at Sanxingdui?

Accepted Answer

Yes. In July 2024, museum conservation director Yu Jian reported approximately eight represented in the finds. No. 2’s digital reconstruction is about 2.88 meters tall; No. 3 is about 1.1 meters and has twisting stems with human-headed birds.

Question 8

Is it the same as a Tree of Life?

Accepted Answer

“Tree of Life” is a helpful broad comparison for a tree connecting different parts of existence. The Sanxingdui sacred tree has its own ancient Shu identity, expressed through its bronze birds, fruiting branches, mountain-like base, and descending dragon.

Question 9

What wish can a sacred-tree-inspired gift carry?

Accepted Answer
