Question 1

What are the Four Great Classical Novels?

Accepted Answer

They are Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Water Margin, Journey to the West, and Dream of the Red Chamber.

Question 2

Who chose the Four Great Classical Novels?

Accepted Answer

No single ancient institution officially chose them at one time. The familiar grouping gradually became a widely shared modern canon through publishing, criticism, education, adaptation, and popular reading.

Question 3

Which novel is easiest to start with?

Accepted Answer

Journey to the West is often approachable through its comic, episodic adventures. Your best starting point still depends on whether you prefer myth, strategy, outlaw stories, or detailed family relationships.

Question 4

Are the Four Great Classical Novels historically accurate?

Accepted Answer

They are literature, not primary historical records. They draw on history, legend, performance, religion, and earlier storytelling in different ways, so a reader should distinguish the novels’ memorable scenes from documented events.

Question 5

Are the Four Great Novels the same as the Four Books?

Accepted Answer

No. The Four Great Classical Novels are long works of fiction. The Four Books are the Confucian texts Great Learning, Doctrine of the Mean, Analects, and Mencius.

Question 6

Should I choose a full translation or an abridged edition?

Accepted Answer

Choose a full translation for the novel’s complete structure and recurring detail. Choose a clearly labeled abridgment or youth adaptation for orientation, then move to a complete edition if the story invites you further.
