Question 1

What does Sishen wadang mean?

Sishen (四神) means the Four Gods or four directional guardians; wadang (瓦当) is the terminal face of an eave tile. Together, the name describes roof-tile ends with Qinglong, Baihu, Zhuque, and Xuanwu motifs.

Question 2

Where were Four Gods roof tiles used?

Accepted Answer

They formed decorated faces at the eave ends of convex cover tiles. Well-known Han and Xin examples are associated with palace and ritual architecture around Chang’an, including guardian designs used on gates within Wang Mang’s ritual complex.

Question 3

What do the four animals represent?

Accepted Answer

Qinglong represents east, spring, and Wood; Baihu west, autumn, and Metal; Zhuque south, summer, and Fire; Xuanwu north, winter, and Water. Together they carry a wish for protection, balance, and harmony through the seasons.

Question 4

Why are Four Gods roof tiles round?

Accepted Answer

Their designs occupy the rounded terminal face of the roof tile. Craftspeople adapted the animals’ bodies, claws, wings, and tails to the rim, creating energetic circular compositions. Some examples include a central boss; others use a different layout.

Question 5

Is Zhuque the same as the phoenix?

Are all Four Gods tiles the same size or color?

Question 7

How is a modern guardian plaque related to a Han tile?

Accepted Answer

It is a contemporary object inspired by the old guardian composition. A pendant, plaque, or ornament may preserve the circular image in ceramic, metal, stone, leather, or resin. Its actual material and source of inspiration give the keepsake its particular story.

Question 8

What does a Four Gods roof-tile gift symbolize?

Accepted Answer

A complete set carries wishes for peace from every direction and harmony through every season. A single guardian can express growth, courage, brightness, or enduring support, making the motif meaningful for a new home, a fresh beginning, or a treasured relationship.
