Question 1

Is every insect inside amber ancient?

Accepted Answer

Only when it was naturally enclosed in the original resin. Modern organisms can be embedded in synthetic resin or added to genuine amber. The host material and the enclosure both need consideration.

Question 2

Can a genuine amber insect look complete or metallic?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Complete natural inclusions exist, and ancient insects can preserve metallic structural colors. Neither a neat posture nor vivid color settles authenticity by itself.

Question 3

Is insect amber the same as beeswax amber?

Accepted Answer

The names describe different features. Insect amber refers to an inclusion; beeswax amber, or mila (蜜蜡), is a trade term for cloudy to opaque amber. An inclusion may be present but difficult to see in opaque material.

Question 4

Can DNA from amber bring back dinosaurs?

Accepted Answer

There is no reliable basis for reconstructing and reviving a dinosaur from ancient amber. A beautifully preserved body outline does not establish surviving DNA. Research on DNA in recent resin concerns very different timescales and conditions.

Question 5

Can I identify the species with a magnifying glass?

Accepted Answer

A lens may show useful features, but an exact species identification often needs specialist comparison and better imaging. “Small fly” or “beetle inclusion” can be an appropriate description when finer details remain unclear.

Question 6

Should I polish amber to get a clearer view of the insect?

Accepted Answer

Ask a specialist first, especially for an unusual specimen or one with cracks. Cutting or polishing removes material and can expose or damage the inclusion. Start with lighting, magnification, and photographs instead.
